Description
In terms of layout and construction, this China Cabinet (as it was called in the 1917 inventory of the Log House contents) is virtually identical to a built-in example that Stickley made for the kitchen of the White Cottage about a year earlier. Unfortunately, the design did not translate well to a free-standing piece of furniture with no central support and–although stable now–deflection has been evident in the cabinet's century of use. Like virtually all of the pieces custom made for the property, the scale of these cabinets, especially in light of the ample storage available in the Kitchen as well as the sideboard and corner cabinets in the Dining Room, demonstrate the unflinching confidence Stickley exuded that the Log House would serve as a central club house to a school or craft community he had planned for Craftsman Farms.
