Description
This Couch Bed is amongst the very few pieces of furniture at Craftsman Farms that we can locate with certainty, despite never appearing in the photographs published in The Craftsman. Placed in one of the Twin Cottages no later than 1912, it is seen in a photograph showing Barabara Wiles with her infant daughter Barbara. The eldest daughter of Gustav and Eda Stickley, Barbara Stickley married Ben Wiles in a ceremony on the porch of the Log House on October 19, 1911. Because the couple lived in the South Cottage where their daughter was born, it is likely that this photograph depicts the interior of that cottage and gives a precise location for the Couch Bed.
Manufactured by Stickley from about 1904 to 1913, Couch Bed (no. 220) must have been a popular model as many forms he made had much shorter production spans. As the large, protruding pins along the side rail indicate, this is one of the "knockdown" pieces of furniture that could be disassembled easily for shipping and storage.
