Description
Stickley's transformation about 1915 back to the Colonial Revival aesthetic that had dominated his work seems like a sudden shift that would have resulted in a profound disruption to factory practices and the workflow long established by his employees. Yet, as this sideboard demonstrates, sometimes the main differences were essentially cosmetic and the structure of the earlier forms was not altered. For all intents and purposes, this is essentially a no. 819 sideboard, executed in mahogany, finished in a darker tone, and featuring historicizing hardware. Modifications like this probably allowed Stickley some flexibility in production, essentially allowing him to market two aesthetics with minimal disruption to the factory line.
This is undoubtedly the "Mahogany Sideboard" listed in the 1917 inventory enumerated in "Schedule B" as belonging to Mr. & Mrs. George Creuss that was in the Log House.
