Description
The motifs on this screen are similar to the large leather panels in the editorial room in Stickley's Craftsman Building in Syracuse, which were likely executed in the summer of 1902 by Jerome Connor, a talented artist who–along with his wife–was briefly employed by Stickley. When Connor was first interviewed in the Syracuse press in August 1902, he was “engaged in painting the coat of arms on the different crafts on leather panels, which will go to adorn the walls of the establishment." Presumably, those are the panels in the Editorial Office seen in the third photograph from the 1904 brochure "What is Wrought in the Craftsman Workshops." This model screen and the associated panels in the Editorial office are amongst the very few examples of heraldry in Stickley's designs. As they are related formally, and were both executed in 1902, it is possible that they represent Connor's designs–about which virtually nothing is known–during his brief employ with Stickley from August to October 1902.
