Description

Poking out from behind the settle and to the right of the piano, this strange shape is–at first glance–beguiling. We believe it is the upper edge of a tilt-top table, a form produced with some regularity since the 18th century that made a convenient tea table. The advantage of this table was that the top was hinged and could stand vertically, thus allowing the form to more easily tucked away when not in use. Since we see so few pieces of antique furniture that Stickley owned, we think it likely that this is the tip table (no. 50 D) that Stickley introduced about 1915. If that proves to be the case, this would also assist in narrowing the date range the photograph was taken. While the model remains uncertain, Stickley's model, like many tilt-top tables in the 18th century, was made of mahogany.
