Title
Lamp
Date
1905-15 (ca.)
Medium
Glazed ceramic, possibly with metal overlay
Description
The leather-topped hexagonal table in the Living Room shows a lamp with the same paper lamp shade in the 1911 Natalie Curtis article, but the base is different than the one seen here. This appears to be a ceramic base as well, but has a raised decoration (or possibly a metal overlay) which creates the shadows seen above. While the 1911 photographs are important documents, as this image shows, the interior was adapted as the family lived in their home. As helpful as the photographs that accompanied the Curtis article are, it is useful to remember that they record a single moment of time, and not the lived experience of the family's daily lives. They capture the general layout of the home and some possessions, but represent an idea of the home rather than the actual conditions.
