Description
The set of porcelain that Stickley purchased from Siegfried Bing during his 1902-03 trip to Europe was exhibited at the March 1903 exhibition of Arts and Crafts Stickley held in his Craftsman Building in Syracuse, where it drew considerable attention. As an author in the local Telegram informed readers: “The exhibit is made by Gustave Stickley, who brought the china and many of the other articles from France and other European countries at an enormous expense.”
Stickley had begun debating the merits of Art Nouveau in The Craftsman as early as July 1902 when Josephine Locke described the movement as "a revelation and attraction" and mentioned she had been to Maison Bing in Paris. Illustrated in the October 1903 issue of The Craftsman, the pattern was referred to as "Porcelaine Leuconoé" by Bing, which derives from the Greek for "white, shining, or bright" (leukós) and "mind" (nóos).
