Description
Following up on the release of his New Furniture catalog in 1900, Stickley issued "Chips from the Workshop of Gustave Stickley" in early 1901. Containing thirty-eight examples of furniture illustrated in line drawings, the catalog served more as an assertion of his Craftsman Ideals than it did as a representation of his total output. Text is the real priority of this publication, and the line drawings serve to illustrate the points he made. In hindsight, the catalog seems designed to sell the ideal, more than the furniture–throughout the pages there is no mention of the cost of any of the items.
It was, perhaps, at this point that his mature Arts and Crafts aesthetic began to solidify for although he continued to make some of the more delicate floriform tables featured in the New Furniture catalog, the emphasis shifted towards heavier, more solid forms with visible structural elements.
