Description
Made for the tea room at his Syracuse Arts and Crafts exhibition in 1903, it is difficult to dismiss the visual echoes of the Colonna-designed service Stickley had purchased while recently in Europe. On this covered compote in particular, where the pale green border and logo are reminiscent of the china he was displaying at the exhibition, the scrolled design in relief that descends from the central hole in the top mirrors the delicate lines and curves found in the Canton china service. Pieces from the tea room are relatively rare, and that these descended in the family suggests that Stickley enjoyed them enough to keep them long after the exhibition had ended.
